CHAPTER THIRTEEN

I WOKE UP in a haze. It felt like I hadn’t even slept but as if I had closed my eyes and opened them again and it was already morning. The only reason I knew I had indeed slept for a while was the fact my face was dry from the tears I had shed until I fell into a slumber.

Chase had tried to kiss me again.

Why was he so adamant about running away? Why didn’t he want to stay with the others? I mean, I knew that the four of them had their differences, but to run away from it all… Was that even possible? Wouldn’t someone eventually find us in Wonderland? I knew Malcolm would, as he was one of the best trackers in all the Kingdoms, or so he said. I had a feeling, after seeing him in the Dark Forest, that he wasn’t joking about that.

While I knew Chase didn’t like doing things Malcolm’s way, or anyone else’s way, I didn’t feel his worry and wanting to escape was just because of that. I had never seen him so worried—not since we were in the Red and White Kingdom and he took me up in that tree. Something else was going on, but I wasn’t sure what it was.

Deciding to push any thought of Chase to the back of my mind, I got ready for the day. Since I was just going to go around talking to people and checking out more houses, I decided to wear one of my floral dresses. After taking a quick shower and changing into my dress, I headed down toward the library where I figured the rest would be waiting.

As I ventured down the hall, I saw someone I didn’t particularly want to see. I bit my lip as she headed over to me.

“Alice! You are back!” The Duchess hurried over as fast as she could in her boot heels and frilly purple dress that looked like something out of a production of a French aristocrat comedy.

“Duchess, great to see you in the morning.”

She kissed my cheeks. “No, it is great to see you! What brings you to Wonderland?”

I shrugged. “You know, still searching for links for Morpheus.”

“Have you all found anything?” she asked.

I shook my head. “No, not yet. Going to go talking to some more people, but so far it has all been dead ends.”

“That is too bad. We need to figure out who was behind that strange man so we can bring him down once and for all, and Wonderland can be safe!”

“I agree.”

“Well.” She smiled. “I believe you will figure it out. You are too smart, Alice. I wish you all the luck.”

She kissed my cheek once again and skipped down the hall. She was a strange one indeed, and I wondered why Chase hated her so much, other than she could be quite annoying. What sort of things did she make him do?

Shaking my head, I headed down the hall toward the library. As I entered, I found Melvin, Davis, and Malcolm all waiting.
